I'm selling Shirtwascash.
Some of you may remember our most opened email ever from January titled This is difficult to write so I'm just going to be honest.
Read it again if you'd like but the gist was that I was tired of being someone I no longer was on here in the pursuit of profit. Our brand image and audiences weren't changing but I did.
Some of you may remember when I was just another anonymous troll starting Shirtwascash 4.5 years ago in /r/4chan
. The internet was a much different time back then. It feels like forever ago. That was when memes still had unknown denizens in them and independent artist cartoons instead of celebs and Spongebob.
Some of you may have thought you were on just another gag gift or raver gear website and never realized almost all of our designs are submitted by anonymous users
and voted by this entire email list. Being community responsive and driven is at the heard of what we do.
I have used Shirtwascash as a way to test social boundaries both online and in the clothes we wear for almost 5 years. Over the years and lessons, Shirtwascash helped break a lifetime of depression for me and I feel deep gratitude every day of my life to you for helping that happen. There are no politics in love.
I am seeing too much sadness and division in the world right now - I am not sure if my heart just opened up more to it or if things are actually worse but I now feel a responsibility to help more. I've increasingly felt this way for years. I am here to announce that Shirtwascash was sold
to a firm that works with social good blockchain & cryptocurrency projects called Upholder
. I started Upholder last December
with two partners. With the crypto crash, Upholder's employees were offered new roles here so we can keep them on the team.
Similar to when I started Shirtwascash, the future is quite uncertain and exciting. Our manufacturing is fully vertical now and we're brave enough
to do things others won't.
At this point, only poor sales can tell us what is acceptable to print
. We want to help you be more fun in the world but also understand apparel is a simple tool to share values and beliefs. >what should I expect from Shirtwascash moving forward?
We are taking social responsibility to help foster fun yet respectful discussion in all of our channels. Our intent is to become a destination that is multi-faceted and genuinely accepting of others. We hope to become a good example for others to replicate over time. >how can I help?
I'll be blunt - we need to increase our sales back to numbers we haven't had in a year or two before we go broke.
We are currently doing $20k-$30k revenue per month but need $60k+ to break even and have some runway in the bank. If you are looking for Christmas gifts or can take a moment to share us - we'd appreciate it.
Please take a moment to follow us below too. I engage with everyone directly as much as possible and mainstream social media is where conversations are happening today.
If you are cautious of our change, I get it. This is basically a 180° switch and further reading can be found under Our Values on our website
